Question NEW CAR-BUYING ISSUES...HELP!!

hey everybody, i need some serious new car advice!

i was in a very, very bad accident last week *which was NOT my fault* and ended up losing my baby: my precious car...a 1987 oldmobile calais that i loved more than most people. now i've been new car shopping, have gone endless places both by myself and with my father and have found two cars that i'm debating over: the 2001 toyota carolla CE and the 2000 honda civic VP.

i was wondering if anyone owned either of these cars and had something good/bad to say about them. if anyone thinks THIER car is an especially good one and one worth considering, please let me know as well. just to make this easier for everyone, i looked at and am not interested in KIA, TOYOTA ECHO, FORD FOCUS AND SUZUKI ESTEEM. maybe this will help narrow it down. i have about $13,000-$14,000 to play around with. any help would be VERY appreciated! talk to you later and thanks for helping me out! i'll keep you updated and let you know which car i buy...i'll be buying one in the next 2 weeks.

I own 2 cars and one of them is a Honda Accord. It's not a Civic but I have had it since 1991, and I bought it new. I have had no problems from it, and it has served me quite well. I would say go with the honda, it's a very reliable car. One of my friends has a Honda Civic (1993) which she bought new, she puts many miles on the car. I think she has about 130K miles and the car has served her well too.

hey!

I'm buying a car now too and I'm deciding between the 2001 Civic EX and the Altima SE. I looked at the corolla and, for the money, was not too impressed by it. i could get an altima (a much better car!) for the same price! plus toyota's get stolen more than any other car in America (the sales lady told me that!).

I love the Civic and I think you can't do wrong with it. Have you looked at the VP? if you haven't, just know that it is a very "basic" car. It doesn't come with most "luxury" items such as air conditioning, power locks or windows, ABS, etc... The next step up is the LX (i think) and that has A LOT more to offer for the money. (but if you're like me and are buying your first car and INSIST on a sunroof...go with the EX)

if you are looking at the 2001 corolla ($19000 by me!), then the Civic LX and EX are DEFINITELY in your price range! that corolla is expensive for a little car! another car you might want to look at is the nissan sentra. a VERY good car for a good price. and the nissan's have this chip thing in the keys where the car can't be hotwired. that's a very nice feature! i'm looking at the sentra too...

my sister has a 2000 ford escort and she loves it! it was only about $13000 for a brand new car almost fully loaded!

hope this helped! this whole car buying nonsense is endless!

oh, i'm in new york where everything is more expensive than anywhere else in the world so the prices might be WAY different by you!

cashmere,

yes, the civic VP is EXACTLY what i'm looking at! and you're right about the corolla, i think...it's way expensive for a basic model (only about 13,500 here in south jersey). the honda dealer i'm talking to is offering me the civic VP at 13,999 which is an awesome price. i'm going to call other dealers and see what they can offer me for the same car. i haven't TEST-driven the honda yet, which is, of course, a major selling point but i have a feeling i'll like it a lot. still, i won't buy it without driving it first. hopefully i'll have chosen a car within the next four or five days. the sentra, eh? i'll have to check that out as well...

thanks so much!

etienne
