Have any of you ever experienced or heard stories about elaborate or crazy ways that people (PNMs, alums, whoever) have tried to win over a chapter?

I thought of this because of something I was reading something the other day. Example - it said a grandmother sent pencils with her granddaughter's name on them to the chapter where the girl was a legacy right before rush.

Stories like this make me giggle...so share

I've heard of people doing that with cakes, etc. It must only work for non-sarcastic chapters, because even if we'd bid a girl we'd never let her forget it. "Hey Pencil Girl, can you grab my purse?"

I think it was the Southern Belle Primer where I read something about older relatives sending cakes & stuff like that to the legacy-chapters? I thought it was pretty hilarious! Do they really do this? (I'm willing to take a guess that if it does happen, it's probably at the schools with 1000's of pnms...)

I've seen some crazy stuff from PNMs (and their families), but nothing like that! I don't doubt that it happened a few decades ago, though!

Yes.

My chapter has received some interesting gifts.

A friend of mine was in another sorority on my campus. A grandmother sent in a Video Rec for her granddaughter was going through rush. The video came complete with pictures of the girl, footage of her cheerleading and participating in different community events, and a little monologue about why her grandaughter would fit into XYZ. The video came complete with a scene that listed all her "rush stats" such as GPA, SAT scores, and clubs she participated in during HS.

UCF has a competitive rush but I'm still shocked at the lengths that family members will go to in order to get a loved one into a chapter. I thought stuff like that only happened at LSU or Auburn.

I know of one grandmother that sent a post dated, "sizable" donation to the chapter where the granddaughter was a PNM... the date on the check was one day past bid day.

Luckily the chapter really liked the PNM. Amazingly enough that's not the last check that the chapter received from the grandmother.

Ethical? No. But the chapter cashed the check anyway.

I have never seen a relative pull something like that, but the PNM's definitely tried stuff.

Sometimes, along with their apps, recs, etc. we would get a "love letter" from a girl. Usually it was something about why they wanted to be in a sorority and how BADLY they wanted it, gushy, cheesey, cliche stuff though...and I have seen them on bright flourescent paper to grab attention (when I saw Elle give her pink scented resume in LB I,this came to mind!). This one girl signed it "Luv ya!", "Jane Doe"...so from then on, she was known as "Luv Ya!" girl. She did turn out to be a sweet girl...

Mostly what I saw at my school were girls that would show up to pref wearing the colors of a certain sorority and earrings or a necklace of the sorority mascot to send the message of who they wanted to join, I guess hoping to be put on their first list or something. That seems illegal, but I guess nobody can stop you from wearing what you want as long as you don't show up with an "I love XYZ shirt".

how about in all of the stories, it was all grandmas that tried to get the hook up for their granddaughters!! i can just picture some sweet old g'ma cooking up some elaborate scheme to win some sorority girl hearts!! lol.

how cute.

I'm curious to know if you've ever had a pnm come through with a resume too good to be true. Like, she said she did this and this and that and it was a bunch of hooey.

Yeah, I'm curious about that too. I really have done the stuff on my resume, but how do you check to make sure they're not pulling it out of their a**? Or do you just take their word for it?

I've never seen anything like that happen during rush, but then, we didn't have any legacies come through while I was an active.

I especially like the post-dated check.

So what are you supposed to do with a gift from a PNM's mom or grandma? Return it? What if the PNM cuts you instead of the other way around?

As for the resume, sometimes you can suss out a lie by bringing it up in conversation. For example, if a PNM says she was on the track team in HS, you can ask her what events she ran and what her times were like - if she really has to stop and think, or if her event times are unrealistic, that would raise a red flag.

The big thing at our school was a grandmother or a mother (or both!) bringing their high school senior to the Chapter, along with a lunch. I'm sure that would be dirty pool now, but wasn't a bit unusual at the time.

"Hi, I'm in town with my daughter. We're going to stop over aorund noon and bring some (fried chicken, pizza, whatever). About how many sisters will be there?"
