Updated! I didn't include any colonies since there are so many this fall. The numbers reflect the current state before '13/'14 colonies.

I guess I need another cup of coffee....I don't understand what the penultimate figure means....For example, Tri-Sigma: 112/189 = 77 chapters closed. But what does the 40 signify? Also, 74% of 189 = 140, not 112.

In Europe, it's common to use commas for decimal points.

I think the comma actually represents a decimal? For your Tri-Sigma example, 112/189 = 59.26% of chapters currently open, or 40.74% of chapters currently closed (40,74%).

Shellfish beat me to it!

Thank you, OllieDog and Shellfish.

I did a quick calculation -- using the numbers in the chart, there are 3189 active chapters out of 4844 installed chapters, for an average of 66% active.
It looks as though Kappa Kappa Gamma with 78% active is the high, and Alpha Epsilon Phi with 35% active is the low. Median is 68.5 active.

The average number of chartered chapters is 186, average number of active chapters is 123.

Yes! Sorry, have been doing 4 years worth of stats in European schools and always have to use the , instead of . now to avoid confusion. I'll change it.

Respost to avoid confusion.

From my numbers....

For the NPC, this information is based from July 2013 (I have a spreadsheet on a project that I have been working on)... This information is on Chartered chapters only....not colonies

It looks like Kappa has the fewest chapters closed, with 25 (137/162)
Delta Zeta has the most with 140 (159/299)

Alpha Phi has 59 closed chapters (159/211)

Just stumbled across this old thread and, being a geek about data, it made me wonder what OPA's closure rate is. We struggled back in our early days when we were figuring out what type of campus environment would be a good long term host to an OPA chapter. Later we climbed a painful learning curve about how to recognize and respond to early warning signs of chapter distress. As a result, we have six single-letter chapters in a row that are currently inactive, ten single-letter inactive chapters in all. We're much more cautious about where we place a colony now, and much better at providing chapter support before things spin out of control.

Omega Phi Alpha: 27/37 (10) 27%

We have three colonies presently. Once they all earn their charter and are inducted, our closure percentage will drop to 25%.

Don't feel bad at all. For Alpha Phi Omega one of the effects of the problems that the fraternity had in the 1970s was a significant number of chapters chartered at *community colleges*. I think of 40 or 50 charters at school that didn't offer Bachelor's degrees that we currently have 2 active. This is relative to an overall average of about half active.
