Yes. As are certain threads.

It's a legitimate question that I don't recall having seen before.
As past threads on the word "frat" have shown, this is a matter of personal preference.
I don't like the word used in any manner -- but a lot of people aren't bothered by it at all.
I have always used "fraternity" to describe a group, a house, a man (or woman since most sororities actually consider themselves fraternities), a party or whatever the word is used with.
I'm really not crazy about the word "fratty."
But, that's only my opinion.

"Frat" as a noun, verb, or adjective is trashy and vulgar. Don't use it unless you want to sound uneducated and low class.

In the NPHC world the term frat is perfectly acceptable and is commonly used.

But isn't that really only used between brothers?? A Kappa wouldn't use "frat" for an Alpha, right?

Yes. That would be like me calling an AST sister without saying "Panhellenic" in front of it.
You are right ladygreek, but I didn't want to confuse the OP as she's not talking about NPHC groups. And I really didn't want her to walk up to an Alpha or Kappa and say "Hey frat boy!"

Well, I bet she'd never say it again after THAT kind of experience.

Maybe. For example they might say "My cousin is one of your frat." Or "what does your frat have planned for Greek Week?"
The guys say frat. The ladies say soror.

He would be more offended by the word boy than the word frat. To us frat is just a shortened term for fraternity or fraternity brother: nothing more, nothing less.
