Most organizations go through phases. At one point, we made a conscious decision NOT to expand because we wanted to focus our resources on making our existing chapters stronger so we weren't closing them. We've switched our focus at this point to expansion and have had some major ones. We've also been more selective and pulled out of consideration at a few schools when we decided it wasn't the right time. These are highly individual, case by case decisions. For some groups, it might not be the right time at the right schools for them.

I'd like to see an updated list of each group's number of chapters. There has been a lot of change in 5 years! I'm weathering the ice storm tonight. Maybe I'll take on that beast.

Here's AST's to get you started! 88 chapters (which includes our newest colony at Bridgewater State)

I counted based on the "black" chapters on Irishpipes list, so it doesn't include anything beyond this spring. Here we go!

Chi Omega 178
Delta Zeta 161
Alpha Phi 161
Kappa Delta 154
ADPI 150
ZTA 163
DG 146
Kappa 141
Tri Delta 138
AChiO 136
Pi Phi 136
Theta 134
Gamma Phi 131
AOPi 132
AGD 122
AXiD 123
Phi Mu 120
Sigma Kappa 113
Phi Sig 109
Tri Sigma 107
ASA 89
AST 89
DPhiE 89
SDT 58
Theta Phi 55
AEPhi 52

I thought it was also interesting to see the concentration of some sororities. The sororities represented in the most states or provinces (including DC) are

DG in 46
Theta, Kappa and Pi Phi in 45
Alpha Phi in 44
Chi Omega in 43
AGD in 41
AXiD, AOPi, AChiO and DZ in 40
ADPi,Tri Delta and KD in 38
Gamma Phi in 37
Sigma Kappa and ZTA in 36
ASA in 31
Tri Sigma in 29
Phi Mu in 27
AST in 26
Phi Sig in 24
DPhiE in 23
AEPhi in 22
SDT in 18
Theta Phi in 16

I also looked at which sororities are the largest regionally. These sororities have an average of 4 chapters or more per state or province:
Gamma Phi (4)
DZ (4)
ZTA (4.7)
KD (4.1)
Phi Mu (4.4)
Phi Sig (4.5)
Chi O (4.14)

And just to be clear, this is not stating anything approaching which sorority is best or even the largest. This only says how many currently active chapters a sorority has.

eta/feel free to post corrections. Thanks Just interested! But I won't add new additions. I'm not Irishpipes!

A small update for KD. We are at 154 active chapters according to our website. I think I counted 38 states including DC.

You have AGD listed twice and Theta Phi is missing.

ZTA has 163 (per its website). Alpha Phi has 159 + 2 colonies (through Spring 2014) for 161 (per website) DZ also is at 161, inclusive of Spring colonies (per website).

AOII is currently at 128 active/200 chartered. We have at least 2 colonies on deck for next semester that I know of at CSU- Chico and UC- San Diego, putting us at 130/201 by the end of spring.

The ice storm must have ended too soon...Delta Zeta, AST, and Gamma Phi are also missing. Gamma Phi is in 36 states currently. That was fun to figure out! (But not fun enough to motivate me to figure out the rest . Thanks, DubaiSis!

Thanks for the corrections. I'm going to go back and re-do ZTA. The others were small enough errors that I can accept I typed 1 instead of 2 a couple times or the colony updates haven't been added to that thread, but this large of a difference doesn't make sense unless I missed a whole state. I'm concerned the 163 number might be all chapters, not currently active ones. But I'll give it another go! 1 sorority isn't the challenge keeping straight all of them was.

DubaiSis, Yes, ZTA has 163 active chapters. ZTA only lists active chapters on its collegiate chaper list on its HQ site. If you count those, you will come up with 163. Hope this helps!

P.S. There is also the "All the Zeta Chapters Ever" thread in the ZTA forum that lists both active and inactive chapters.

Mea culpa. I still don't get matching numbers, but after going through the list again I ended up with an even larger number, so I'll go with yours and call myself unable to count small numbers, even while using Excel. And by the way, I seem to have left off Georgia, Illinois and West Virginia completely. Do I have some subconscious bitterness toward ZTA that would cause me to make that large of a mistake?
