San Jose Fraternity Brawl Leaves 1 Dead

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Fraternity members who apparently met in a suburban park to settle a disagreement ended up brawling with sticks and knives, in a melee that left one dead and several injured, police said.

The large group from San Jose State University's Pi Alpha Phi and Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternities fought in the park in the early morning hours Wednesday. Pi Alpha Phi members from the University of California, Santa Cruz, also participated, police said.

"Quite honestly, except for the lack of the tattoos, this is a gang fight," Sgt. Steve Dixon, a police spokesman. "Instead of gang members, it's frat members."

Four people were stabbed, including Alam Kim, who died Wednesday on his 23rd birthday. One person was treated for head trauma.

A neighbor reported the fight.

"They could hear somebody screaming `Somebody's been stabbed!'" said Dixon.

The fight apparently grew from an argument at a pool hall Monday and the groups agreed to meet to settle things, Dixon said.

More than 60 of the fighting fraternity members and other witnesses remained at police headquarters Wednesday for questioning. There were no immediate arrests.

Pi Alpha Phi was established in 1926 by Asian students at the University of California, Berkeley, because existing fraternities discriminated against minorities, according to the group's Web site at San Jose State.

Officials at San Jose State said in a news release they were "greatly saddened by the tragic events." In Santa Cruz, the university was not aware of previous trouble from the group, said campus spokeswoman Elizabeth Irwin.
