Alrighty. Since no one else seems to be stepping up, I will answer your post.
1 - You're actions are beyond stupid. You don't insult someone's family, particularly if you are interested in pursuing a relationship with them. Only after years of putting up with someone are you allowed that right.
2 - I wouldn't call him. Why do I say that? You'll probably blurt something equally stupid out on the phone. You should stick to a letter or email, so that you can apologize for what you said, offer some explanation for why you did something like that and leave the ball in his court for further communication. Let's be serious for a moment. You may have seriously offended him and he may not want to ever talk to you again. Continuing to pester him isn't going to change his mind and may lead to stalking charges.
3 - Work on controlling your mouth. This is just a potential relationship, but what if this was a job interview and you blurted out something nasty about the interviewer's family? Yeah, kiss that job good-bye.
