USC (SoCal) NO on-campus students this fall

https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/07/...mpression=true

Rough news to hear. Thursday, July 2, USC announced that we will be no on-campus classes for the fall semester. Recruitment is in January, so let’s hope we can flatten the curve here by that time. I know a few house directors at USC and I don’t know how this is going to affect their jobs. I will reach out, but they probably don’t know either.

I live in LA and I wear a mask every day.

oh! This is what all that stuff was about online--about kids turning down their acceptances because they wanted to be on a real campus this fall. I hadn't paid attention to where they were talking about.

I have several friends who work at various schools in Admissions Dept. roles, and they say more and more of their admitted freshmen are requesting delayed admission and are taking a “gap year”—and honestly, if there ever was a year to take advantage of that, this is it.

One of my sons wants to teach in Japan and the other wants to study abroad in Spain because he's going to teach Spanish. That kind of gap year isn't possible for them now because other countries are closed down too.

My son desperately wanted to go to school in the U.K., and was accepted, but I saw the writing on the wall in February. He's going to TX State (Hail, alma mater!) even if it is long distance. He can do like his sister and go to the U.K. for his master's.

I want to visit the UK, Spain, and Japan myself! It's so hard to wait. I am especially hoping for the Spanish-teacher son to go because his college has a very intensive spoken Spanish exam they must pass before graduating. Plus the state Spanish teacher exam is rough too; it had a 33% pass rate 30 years ago and I've heard it's no better now.

Good article from today's NY Times about professors loath to return to the classroom; of course, the tenured professors are older and most at risk:
