Question A year in another land : question

Hey ! I am Justine. I live in France, but in two years I will go in an american university for one year. (sorry for all the mistakes I can make with my language)...
I have a lot of questions about greek, but I didn't know where to post it so if anyone can help me, just for my own information :

1: I read somewhere that living in a greek house is not free, but, do you have to pay every month for living there + to pay for your admission (I saw somewhere that it can be 2 000 for a year). But If it's the case, how much do you need to pay every month to stay there ?

2: If you are accepted in one of the greek's house, do you have to stay there for the 4 years of your university ?

3: Can you go to a greek house like, in the third year ? Or is it an obligation to come in your first year at the recrutment ?
Thanks a lots !

In order to live in a Greek house you have to go thru sorority recruiitment and join one of the Greek organizations. Each has their own rules about living in the house and each has their own costs. It is best to wait till you know which university you will attend here and then ask your questions. It's far too vague at this point.

Bienvenue au GreekChat!

If you will only be at an American university for one year, you may not be eligible to participate in recruitment. Once you determine where you will be going to school, call the Greek Life office at that university and ask. Even if you are eligible to participate in recruitment, GLOs (Greek Life Organizations) may hesitate to offer you a bid (invitation to join), as the members know that you will only be there for one year.

If you are accepted to a housed sorority, you may be expected to live in the house. You would have to live somewhere anyway, though, so you will end up paying someone for housing, whether it's the sorority, the university (for a bed in the dorms), or a landlord (for an off-campus apartment).

Regardless of whether you join a housed or unhoused sorority, you will have to pay dues each semester, and a one-time initiation fee. You will also have to buy a badge. A new member often has to spend several hundred dollars in fees for the first semester.

If you do join a GLO and you are initiated, you are a member for life, no matter where in the world you live. It's definitely worth investigating.

A badge is a small pin made of gold that one wears on her blouse or dress during meetings and special events. Many badges also have pearls and gemstones on them. Depending on the style of pin you desire, they may cost anywhere from $50 to $500.
