Unhappy NKU Colonization halted

"Chi Omega regrets that we had to withdraw from the colonization process at NKU. We are thankful for the support and hospitality we received this week and enjoyed meeting the women who expressed interest. "

WOW, I have never heard of a group doing this. Not enough interest?

Maybe the PNMs that came out didn't meet their membership requirements?

Extension is a huge financial commitment, I'm sure it was a decision that was not taken lightly by the powers that be at Chi Omega. I'm interested to see the ramifications of this, since it is pretty unique.

I have heard of such a situation. In that case, the school was not forthcoming with information that was key to the sorority's decision to colonize.

I know of a situation in which another sorority agreed to colonize at a Georgia university and then they were told the real truth about the housing situation. Although the colonization had been announced, the sorority (understandably) backed out.

Right before preference. Dang.

So what happens in a case like this? Does the university try to get AOII to move their stacked colonization up? Do they offer ADPi a chance to colonize since they were the third group that presented? Do they open for expansion again? Or were Chi Omega's reasons for bailing so significant that all expansion possibilities are put on hold at this point?

Better to do it now than to go through with the colonization and have the chapter fail abruptly. This has happened way too many times, and it's good to see that national groups are finally seeing the light and putting practicality and the feelings of the prospective members first and their pride second.

As to whether this moves up the stack, I would guess that the two groups in question are going to be taking a VERY good look (as in a 5 million fine tooth combs look) as to whether they want to go for it or not. It all depends on whether it was something going on w/ Chi Omega internally (i.e. they had another chapter or colony that was eating trucks of money for breakfast), or whether the problem was with the school.

I can't imagine any group would want to go right in now - undoubtedly those quality pnms who were pursuing Chi Omega only to have the rug pulled out from under them would be very wary about committing to another recruitment experience. My guess would be that A O Pi gives the campus a very through look and waits, if they decide to proceed.

Very disappointing to all involved. I don't know any details, but I hate to hear this news.

I totally agree with 33 (again). Better to stop now, than have to deal with a nightmare situation later. All respect goes to the leadership of Chi Omega for what must have been a very difficult decision.

My opinion: it is not about Chi Omega, but likely points to another, greater difficulty in the system there that their leadership was (fortunately) quick to recognize.

Time will tell.

It's unfortunate, but it happens. It's better for it to happen now, than to colonize knowing that the environment isn't suitable for a viable chapter or that you can't fully support it (whatever the case is for Chi O.) You have to do what's best for the org.

Two very experienced National officers were part of the colonization team, so I trust them to have made the best decision possible.

I just really hate it for the young women who got their hopes up this week and it didn't pan out.

Northern Kentucky University is located just seven miles south of downtown Cincinnati, the city where Chi Omega's national president (since 2008?) lives. It's a shame that they got this far into colonization before canceling and that many young women at NKU got let down.

It's hard for me to keep from getting a tad defensive.

With this kind of logic, I guess Letitia Fulkerson should have quit her full-time job and spent less time with her volunteer role as National President so she could have spent several weeks tabling in the NKU student center?!
