Public Relations
Hi guys! The holidays are coming up and I was wondering what kind of things you all do for PR. The thing I can think of is just sending out Christmas cards to all the departments. Is there anything special you all do? Thanks a lot!

PoohsHoneyBee,
Xmas cards are definately a great PR tool. At UBC we send them out to all the fraternities and sororities wishing them good luck on finals and, of course wishing them a merry christmas.
Other things to do at this time of year: your colony good support a campus wide food drive for your local food bank.
In Vancouver we have a Christmas Hamper program for single mothers who in live in our city's poorer areas and can't afford to give their children a good christmas. The DG chapter philanthropy chair called the hamper program to get a name of a family that needs help. The sisters put together a huge gift box with food and toys for the family and will be delivering it to the family.

Hello Ariana,
PR stuff :
*Do charitable things for the community (i.e. Toys for Tots drive, coat drive for needy families) and publicize them EVERYWHERE to get a better turnout.. like The South Texan (TAMUK newspaper), The Kingsville Record, ask the TAMUK radio station to do on-air promotions of your event (they will do them for free)
*I know the football season is almost over, but maybe with the opening of the basketball season you can put an ad in their game programs with something like "Delta Phi Epsilon supports the Javelinas!" (Sounds kind of corny, but the sororities here do that sort of thing in the football program and it really helps get your name out!)
edited to include: Check with the radio station on campus (K9-11) to see if they will be hosting any events. When I worked there, they did a couple of events with fraternities on the campus. For example the fraternities helped pass out drinks, flyers, etc., and wore their letters, so you're not only helping the radio station out, you're getting your name out and having some fun too!
Best of luck

Hi PHB,
I would send Holiday cards, not X-mas cards, but it is a great idea. You should send them to the other sororities and fraternities on your campus as well. You could also try getting a recipe for cookies that makes quite a few and send them/deliver them to their meetings to either the sororities or fraternities or both!
Then there's always visiting the nursing home and giveing manicures to the ladies (see Zephyr) and also I don't know any chapter that does it, but you could pair up with a fraternity. get dressed up and go dance with the older ladies and gentlemen at a home for the elderly if that suits you. I think the toy drive is a great idea. Or how about (depending on your campus size) selling like candygrams or something and donating the proceeds (minus startup costs) to charity. You could do a clothing drive to. If everyone is going home and needs to clean out their closets. I'll see if I can think of anything else.

Hey --
Just to add... but its finals and I know that my chapter is extremely skeptical about any activity that involves a great deal of time during this stressful time of the semester. So usually instead, with the holiday cards, we just get 10+ sisters to wear our house letters and just set up camp at the library. Mostly everyone on campus is there anyway so we get some exposure with miminal effort and miximum studying time. Another idea is to make a study break food spot for other students - but look into security issues. We can't do it on our campus without three weeks notice, trying to go through red tape.
Good luck on finals everyone!

dphies00's idea about the library is an awesome idea!
something else that came to mind when I read it - why not eat in the Union for lunch, say once every 2 weeks with a bunch of the girls and wear your letters? I think it would be kind of cool to see how great you girls get along, how well your sisterhood bond is, and it's also great for letting people on campus see who you are who might not otherwise know there is actually greek life on campus.

When I was a collegiate, back in the day , we did a cocoa and cookie break at the girl's dorm on campus during finals. For two hours, we went and gave out cookies and hot chocolate for a study break. We only had like three girls at each dorm (4 dorms), and each sister worked an hour. On top of being a study break for the girls in the dorm, it's a study break for you all, and you get to meet a lot of girls and talk!
Pooh, as someone else said, make sure you send Happy Holiday cards, and not x-mas. You never know who is celebrating what
Good luck!
Heather

I just want to thank you all for all your suggestions. They were really great, I knew I could really count on the boards. I'm using all the ideas that we have time to use, since we have about three weeks left for the semester. We will be handing out Holiday Cards to all the Greek organizations on campus and make cookies for the All Greek Council weekly meeting. We'll also set up "camp" at the library for a snack break. Again I want to thank you all for all the suggestions, everything we are not being able to do will be going into a binder and used next year. You all are the best!

You can make signs wishing everyone luck on their finals and happy holidays from the sorority and hang them in the Union and dining halls and other high traffic areas.
