Seton Hall pledge paddled, then beaten up after he squealed

2 charged in Seton Hall hazing incident

November 16, 2005, 4:54 PM EST
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Two men are facing criminal charges for allegedly kidnapping a Seton Hall University student after he complained about being paddled during a hazing incident at an unofficial fraternity, the school said.
The victim went to college officials on Nov. 7 to complain that he had been paddled during an event at the TKE fraternity, said university spokesman Thomas White. The next day, school officials saw "photographic evidence" of the paddling, White told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Wednesday's newspapers.
He would not identify the victim.
On Nov. 10, university officials met with members of the campus' Greek community to discuss the alleged hazing, and the next day, the victim said, he was grabbed, put in a car, driven off campus and beaten.
He reported the incident to South Orange police, who arrested a student and a second suspect who does not attend the university on Tuesday. Police did not return numerous calls seeking comment Wednesday.
Seton Hall said its own investigation is continuing, and noted the student charged in the case could be expelled.
"Seton Hall strongly condemns this kind of behavior," White said.
TKE is not officially recognized by the school as a fraternity.

Statement from TKE Hdqtrs.:

(I-Newswire) - INDIANAPOLIS, IN- Two men from the South Orange, NJ area were reportedly arrested this week for allegedly kidnapping and beating another man associated with Seton Hall University._ Reports claimed that the men were from a Tau Kappa Epsilon ( TKE ) chapter at Seton Hall._
Officials from the fraternity headquarters reported that TKE officially shut down its Seton Hall chapter in May of 2005. The Fraternity revoked recognition from the chapter last academic year due to failure to meet TKE's operating standards and failure to communicate or cooperate with regional volunteers and professional staff.
“Hazing has no place in Tau Kappa Epsilon or any fraternity for that matter,” says TKE CEO Kevin Mayeux. “TKE does not have an active chapter at Seton Hall, and has not operated one on the campus this academic year._ Any group claiming to be a TKE chapter at Seton Hall is doing so without authorization, and they are not a recognized part of our Fraternity.”
