So a person who was born female, is changing into a male, wants to join a sorority. I just don't get it.

""I believe, over time, the gender of these organizations will fade," he said. "I hope."
And I hope that I am not around to see that happen.

"Before winter recruitment, which ran Jan. 5-10, Davies said he was told by Northwestern staff that all 12 social sorority houses were notified of his gender identity and many of their international headquarters might find him ineligible based on their bylaws or guidelines, which often state that recruits must be women or identify as women."
Options:
If you are identified as a man ---> Fraternity or Co-ed
If you are identified as a woman ---->Sorority or Co-ed
If you are identified as genderqueer ---->Co-ed or create a new group
"Eighteen-year-old Adam Davies said he was drawn to the tenets of Greek life — philanthropy, bonding and leadership — but that with his changing body he might not feel comfortable living in a fraternity."
I would suggest waiting until his change is done but I understand NWU has a competitive greek scene (time issue & freshman preferred) so why not consider a coed org, a lgbt org or create a new one?

Do all the fraternities at Northwestern require members to live in?

I don't know. (eta) You might be able to find the info on the individual chapter sites?

While he identifies as a man, he said that's only when society requires that he pick a gender, because his gender doesn't fit neatly in one of two categories.

That doesn't make any damn sense. If you are gender fluid or asexual or questioning freaking say so.

To be fair, some surveys and forms still only give the option of "male" or "female". The option of "other" is common but not universal.

Here's my question: Has there ever been an actual case where a male joined a national fraternity, transitioned to female, and then joined a national sorority? Or vice versa? Would most organizations' regulations even account for such a scenario?

I would assume the standard dual membership issues kick in here.

Transitioning takes a long time. At large traditional schools, they would probably have no luck getting a bid as a junior/senior before the question of their gender and/or previous membership even came into play.
