Canadian Sororities.

Hi hi, my daughter is going to attend UBC this year. She is very keen to rush for a sorority. But I am worried as a mother if this will compromise her studies.

Could someone please enlighten me about sororities at UBC. I am not very informed about greek life. What does it mean to be a top tier sorority? Or bottom tier? What are these reputations?

Thanks,

I have read a few of these thread and I just want to apoligize if I have offended anyone by these questions. But I need to know a bit more in order to guide my daughter.

You won't find anyone here who will discuss sorority's perceived reputations. I think it would be a good idea for your daughter to do her own research and not to rely on the opinions of random internet strangers.

If you need help "guiding" your daughter, tell her that she is in college for an education first & foremost. Grades are important to sororities, so if she does decide to join, she needs to continue her focus on her education.

First of all, I don't believe that a mother can't spell apologize.

Second, tiers and reputations are based on rumors and hearsay and really aren't going to be that helpful in preparing for recruitment.

Third, the best thing she can do is go through recruitment and form her own opinions.

All NPC sororities value scholarship, so your daughter's grades should not suffer. In fact, on most campuses sorority g.p.a.s are higher than the all-women or all-student averages.

The best thing to do is to read the recruitment "stickies". As to "tiers" - that's simply a subjective ranking. Your daughter needs to find her own way to the house where she will be happiest.

This thread contains everything she needs to know to get ready:

It would also be beneficial to her to seek out this info on her own, rather than having Mommy do all the legwork.

Jen, thats great news! But my daughter says that the rush process is very early in the year. Do they base you on your highschool GPA?

What percent of girls rush approximately? Would you say you have had a fun experience overall?

Congratulations to your daughter for getting into UBC ~ she is in for a wonderful time!!

Greek life at UBC is alive and well! Your daughter will have the opportunity to meet women from seven great sororities if she chooses to participate in Formal Recruitment in September. As each chapter has much to offer both academically and socially, your daughter really cannot go wrong.

My advice on how your daughter can be prepare for recruitment would be for your daughter to finish HS with the best grades possible and for her to approach recruitment, and university life in general, with a positive attitude!

Please wish her the best of luck with Recruitment 2009 and encourage her to come share her story with us! Note that there are a number of active UBC sorority members and alumni here on GC.

Cheers

Hi Jen! I was wondering what that minimum GPA is. I had a rough semester last year and my GPA was a 2.5 but the year before that it was a 3.3 would I still be able to enter a sorority?

Also I was wondering do a lot of women who rush at UBC not get bids? And do pledges get to/have to live in the panhellenic house?

On Canada Day, this seemed an appropriate bump Also, IIRC, there is an Alpha Pi Phi colony at Simon Fraser now!
