Historically black colleges recruiting Hispanics

Friday, August 11, 2006; Posted: 10:13 a.m. EDT (14:13 GMT)

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- Faced with stiff competition for their traditional students, historically black colleges are now making a push to recruit Hispanics.

Black colleges that want to shore up enrollment numbers are revising recruitment strategies to include more members of the nation's largest and fastest-growing minority. The campuses are hiring Hispanic recruiters, distributing brochures that feature Hispanic students and establishing special scholarships for Hispanics.

What do you think? Is this the beginning of the end of predominatly black colleges or is it a wake up call for us (AfAm)?

Education should be for everyone regardless of race.

it's a wake-up call.

Although the schools are HISTORICALLY black, many are no longer predominately black. I don't think it poses a danger to the schools with long histories and strong traditions (IMO, the more prestigious / private)... but to the state schools that have to fight for funding this is a very real issue. the more students enrolled, the more funding you will recieve.

side note: when i was at NCCU (undergrad in the late 90s), the admissions department ALWAYS found non-AfAm students to feature on the recruitment brochures. Our law school and grad programs were ALREADY majority non-AfAm.

I went to NCA&T in the early 90s and I was one of six BLACK students in my major (Landscape Architecture).

I think recruiting Hispanics is putting a new spin on "minority" recruiting. I hope by doing this, the population of black students doesn't disappear (ex. Bluefield College in WV).

I too think it is an issue of funding-Hispanics are very viable minorities these days -and programs and funds are directed toward them.

Great idea...don't really see any problem with it if it helps the school(s) stay open.

some hbcu have long been recruiting other races as well as international students. sc state for example regularly sends ppl to the caribbean on recruitment drives. (that's how i ended up there) i teach there now and sometimes when i look out the window i see a wider variety of races than when i was there. it's a good thing b/c i think that alot of my students need more exposure to different ideas, cultures, creeds etc.
