Fraternity for disabled students?
Hi, I joined the network because I'm considering founding a new Greek organization with two friends, one of whom uses an electric wheelchair. The fraternity (or sorority. either would most likely be co-ed) would be for students with disabilities. The idea is to eventually adapt a house and offer wheelchair accessible rush, social, and philanthropic events. I realize founding a fraternity is a long, involved, difficult process, more so because this would be a new organization as opposed to a new chapter of an existing fraternity. So I'd appreciate any advice, or even information as to whether a fraternity of this nature exists already (nothing turned up in my googling)
Thank you

Why not just start a campus club?
And what is wrong with existing organizations? Have you contacted Greek Life to request accommodations so that you may attend recruitment events? Most newer construction homes are going to be wheelchair accessible.

While I agree with Kevin's advice, to answer your question, the organization may match up with what you are looking for is Delta Sigma Omicron. Googling, I see chapter at U of Illinois, UNC-Pembroke and Arkansas State.

Why does this need to be a fraternity. This seems to put all the focus on the disability then the person IMO.

Right. After all, people with disabilities have abilities in other ways, and would still make them eligible to rush and be an active member of the traditional greek community.
Plus, I'm sure many of us have members who are disabled in some way and if they are unable to take part in an activity, accommodations are made. Right?
Yeah, I don't see why this need could not be fulfilled via a student club or support group.
