Question Is my sorority name already taken?

I'm organizing a high school sorority and everything is great, except for the name. How do I know if it is already taken?

The first place to check would be Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities. This book contains a listing of current and defunked Sororites and Fraternities. The last edition was in 1991.

Several different sites such as Greekpages, GreekSpot, GreekZone contain a listings of assorted pages for greek organizations. These may be useful in checking for organiztations that have been established since 1991. Also consider doing a websearch.

Hope this helps.

Starting a soroity takes a lot of effort and dedication if you truly want your sorority to achieve greatness. The foundation and destiny of your sorority lies in the ritual. I suggest finding a thorough summary of Greek mythology and legend to spark the values of your sorority. And let some soroity's rituals be fundamental, while other rituals are allowed to evolve. Choose the symbols of your badge and crest wisely. Most important, don't let any yahoo in town join the sorority, keep it sacred, treasured. I belonged to a soroity for four years in college. We only allowed the most genuine girls enter our sisterhood. With this sorority you could bring something great to this world, but first, you must bring greatness to your sorority.
