While he was there, did he have too much to drink one night and die of alcohol poisoning so we don't have to hear about his ass any more?

Not quite... but many of the universities in the UK are residential colleges; when you declare a major you also enroll as a member of that particular college. You not only take classes in the college, but also eat and sleep there. Loyalties to residential colleges are almost like fraternities and sororities in a way; instead of Greek-letter organizations many proudly boast their affiliation with Kings College or Queens College, which are part of Oxford University.
