Child abuse must be stopped

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is a problem that takes more than money to defeat. But money is needed.

Kappa Delta sorority at Troy University is selling large blue ribbons to hang on businesses or mailboxes. The ribbons will cost $10 each.

"We're selling the blue ribbons for Child Abuse Prevention Month," said Kappa Delta member Amber Dean, who was a volunteer at the child abuse clinic in Dothan. "All proceeds go to the Child Advocacy Center. In Dothan, the blue ribbons are a big, big deal."

Kappa Delta is also selling tiles at TroyFest on Saturday. Children can paint a tile however they like and sign it. The CAC will use the tiles as decorations.

"She sought me out," Watson said, praising Dean's help. "She just wanted to help us get started. She and all the KDs have been wonderful."

"We'll sell the ribbons this week and next week and they'll stay out the entire month of April," Dean said.

It's alarming that there needs to be an awareness of a Child Abuse Prevention Month. It's frightening to find out that it happens in Pike County.

"Child abuse, sexual abuse, is on the rise," Harrison said. "Citizens have to let their government entities know what's a priority."

KD's lend hand to Child Advocacy Center

The future Pike Regional Child Advocacy Center got a little help from some Troy University students on Thursday afternoon.

Members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the Kappa Delta sorority donated their time and some money to help fix up the new PRCAC building.

"We were just happy to be able to help out," Molly Mitchell, former president of KD, said. "This is all part of our philanthropy project and we chose to help out this local organization."

The volunteers chose to paint and be responsible for a conference room that is being remodeled near the back of the building.

With the help from the SAE fraternity the girls were able to get the room painted quickly.

Thornton also presented Mona Watson, the director of the PRCAC, with a check for $2,740.26.

"We raised the money through our Shamrock Project," Thornton said. "We sold raffle tickets and hot dogs on campus and had a charity three-on-three basketball game."

After all the money was raised 20 percent had to go to the National Kappa Delta fund and the girls donated the rest to PRCAC.

The money is going to pay for a lot of things the center needs.

"It's going to pay for all the ceilings to be redone, for new carpet to be put in several of the rooms and for more painting," Watson said. "This money is going to be a big help to us."

Watson was very pleased when a member of KD approached her about helping with the construction of the center.

"I was approached about two weeks ago by Amber Dean and she said that KD would be happy to help us out," Watson said. "She had worked with a child advocacy center in Dothan before and knew that this was a worthwhile cause."
