Every Time a Fraternity or Sorority Got in Trouble This Year

In a posting entitled “Every Time a Fraternity or Sorority Got in Trouble This Year,” Bloomberg has a graphics-and-text timeline of incidents in 2015 from January through May 29. At the end of the timeline is a statement about the methodology. Quite a few of the incidents / sanctions / “punishments” will be no surprise to GreekChatters who follow LaneSig’s and Kevin’s threads.

See

http://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/20...rity-offenses/

Quote from above ^^:
” In just the spring semester of 2015, 133 fraternity and sorority chapters at 55 U.S. colleges were shut down, suspended, or otherwise punished after alleged offenses including excessive partying, hazing, racism, and sexual assault, according to reports compiled by Bloomberg.”

TSM had a decent response to this article:

http://totalsororitymove.com/bloombe...call-bullshit/

"But let’s get a little perspective here: according to the authors[...] '133 fraternity and sorority chapters at 55 U.S. colleges were shut down, suspended, or otherwise punished {...].' That seems like a lot, but according to the North American Interfraternity Conference, there were approximately 5,500 fraternity chapters across the US and Canada in 2011. So [...] those 133 chapters account for fewer than 3% of Greek organizations. None of us who are Greek for the right reasons – the sisterhood, the values, or the philanthropy – have any use for the people who partake in the acts that are described in this timeline. Good riddance to all of them, because that 3% isn’t our majority. They are the minority who get in the way of those here for the right reasons."

To take that perspective even further, in many of the cases where chapters were disciplined, a minority of the chapter membership caused the problems or were guilty of a transgression.

Also, I know the one incident involving my fraternity, no charges have been filed by either city police or school officials even though the allegation was made six months ago. How many others are similar? I'm sure Bloomberg will cover retractions the same way.
