Walking Women Home

Is it a common pratice at other universities for fraternity brothers to walk home women, especially when they are intoxicated?

Is this something that happens in more urban campuses or it doesn't matter?

Some of the fraternities on my campus will do so. Some of them make it a point to do so, and others you have to ask and they'll round someone up to help you make it back. (I have been helped back to the dorms many, many times by these gentlemen.)

That is a must. I look down on any MAN, not just fraternity man, who doesn't have the decency to do so or find someone who can.

Hell yeah.. or at least it better be still...

When I first became intersted in Lambda Chi one of the selling points to me was the noble concept of walking home girls that may or may not be capable themselves. It was just something that a true gentleman would do in my opinion... which was the main selling point of the Fraternity and chapter...

I applaude the efforts of the young men who take the time to walk intoxicated women home, but by the same token, I might be a little scared if I was drunk and some strange guy offered to walk me home.

I thought the same thing that Lady Pi Phi did. Our sisters need to walk us home. We're putting a young woman at risk if we send her off with a fraternity guy when she's had too much to drink. Because of problems we had when I was a collegian, we made a rule that sisters who go to the party together leave together. While I'm sure most of the men would have good intentions, there are enough who wouldn't to make it risky.

We TD's like to walk our sisters home. I've walked home many girls from other sororities too. Granted we're in the quietest of suburbs, but it's still a college campus and stuff happens. Since I don't drink, I've rarely been walked home, but my guy friends who happen to be in a fraternity have offered/done it on occasion. Most people here go out in groups anyways. Its rare that someone goes to a party alone.

Ditto, I don't want strange men walking me home, it should be my sisters. Though honestly, it is just not the best idea to get intoxicated to the point where you have to have help. Because it does happen, I do think that fraternities that offer this need to be very very careful. If something sketch happens, it could come back onto the fraternity.

I would've been blown away had a fraternity on my campus ever actually offered to do this when I was a collegian... I didn't see a whole lot of gentlemanly acts.

I agree that if something weird happened, it could come back to bite them in the ass, but then again, damned if you do, damned if you don't. If they just left a drunk ass woman walk home by herself, could have trouble there also.

Same here. I'd trust the university's "Safewalk" program more, I'm afraid.

it seldom happen here because most of the women walk together in groups from the dorm or drove together.

One of my friends was totally intoxicated at our last party. I took her to my favorite late night eatery and brought her some food to sober up and then send her home in a taxi cab which I pay for because she lived in the same area as I and she came by herself.

There are some men who do care.

You bet we did. Regardless of the sobriety of the woman.

It was even more so a priority right after the tragic killings at Florida State back in 1978.

Right after the murders, and while Bundy was still at large, an intoxicated homeless man broke into one of the sorority houses at Kentucky. Two of my best friends from high school were members. He made it all the way to the third floor where he was found. He claimed he just wanted to see the inside of a sorority house.

In any case, this coming right after the killings put the whole UK community on edge. While the university was setting up a safety escort service, they also quickly set up a buddy system to escort women around campus at night. This was for the women's dorms, the sororities as well as women who lived off campus and who would be escorted to their cars.

The idea was that until the university's system was in place, each sorority (dorm) was to get male friends to sign up to be escorts. This way, each house 'knew' the person that would be escorting them.

I volunteered with my friends' chapter. As did other friends, biological brothers and boyfriends of the chapter. Same happen with the other groups. While many already knew me/us, we were 'formally' introduced to the membership so those members who did not know us would now know who to expect.

This was back prior to cell phones etc. so the girl either set something up ahead of time - i.e. meet inside the library at 8 p.m. - or the girl called their sorority house (dorm) and then the house would call one of 'their guys' to escort her home.

walking women home

I was walked back to the house many a night, no matter whether drunk or sober, by a certain fraternity that prided themselves on being gentlemanly. This was the only one out of quite a few fraternities on campus that I ever heard about doing this, although I am sure others probably did too.

My school also offered a SafeWalk type program although I don't recall many people I know using it --- it may be gone now.

It is weird here, the fraternity guys definately walk home freshman women. Nothing happens because they have a sense of honor and they don't want to screw over their fraternity name. I guess a date rape thing happened (in the 80's), and that chapter shrank incredibly and women never went back. Now, they are known as the most noble on campus.

Sorority sister do walk each other home, but I tend to go out alone, because I am friends with one fraternity, and my sisters don't know them as well. So they always walk me home, whether or not I am drunk (unless I am driving).
