Do you know of any good apartment links? I've tried all the regulars:
RentNet.com
Apartments.com
Apartmentguide.com
craigslist.org
Homefair.com

Please post ideas!

The other one to check into is www.apartmentratings.com -- it's ratings and commentary regarding apartments. All the things that the rental agents won't tell you! Very revealing comments. Of course, you can tell which ones are the ones submitted by managers (they sound like a publicity brochure)

I work in the apartment business. We hate apartmentratings.com! It's like the great big bathroom wall of the internet where anyone can write anything.

Someone I interviewed for a job posted a really nasty bogus review on apartmentratings.com for one of our properties. The review included many libelous accusations about our company, its practices, and some members of the staff. The apartmentratings.com site owner refused to remove it, even though it was clearly not a resident's review of the property (and in violation of their user agreement). We've also had negative reviews posted about our properties by our COMPETITORS. So, take that into consideration when you read the reviews there.

Some other sites you might want to try are:

Rent.com -- this one pays you $100 if you rent an apartment from its listings. All you need to do is make sure that you tell the agent on your first contact that Rent.com is where you saw the property. (We pay them a flat fee per rental rather than a monthly listing fee, and that's how they can afford to do this.)

ForRent.com

Good luck!

You can also try homes.com - they have a section for apartments and rentals.

livingchoices.com also has apartments and you can order a free apartment book in print.

In my experience, it's always better to check a local newspaper to find apartments, and better still to drive around neighborhoods looking for "for rent" signs. If you're not in the area where you're looking to rent, you should be able to find a local paper that lists their classifieds on the internet so you can see them there. Most of those big rental websites list only large apartment complexes, so if you're looking for a smaller building or something with character, chances are you won't find it there.

I am a fan of rent.com mainly cause if you sign a lease with some place you found on there they give you a $100 gift certificate to amazon... or at least they did in the past. Also checking newspapers online in the area you are looking helps too...
