MIT and Black Greek Letter Organizations

A few weeks ago, I called three friends, AudreyRose ‘21, Nikayah ‘19, and Kenneth ‘19, to talk about their experiences as members of historically Black Greek letter organizations. My goal is to illustrate that there is a D9 presence at MIT and show the many benefits of joining one.

Thank you for sharing this!

I'm an alum of MIT. I was on campus for quite some time before I learned there were D9 chapters around. I wasn't interested, as I'd pledged a local that later became a chapter of AEPhi, but I was somewhat surprised.

If you ask your average MIT student or alum which sorority was the first to be represented at MIT, odds are they'll say Alpha Phi. Actually AKA was there first!

It wasn't clear from the article, but I'm guessing that for most or all of the D9, there is an undergrad chapter that covers the colleges and universities in Boston and the close in Suburbs (MIT/Harvard etc.)

It depends on the organization, the school and the charter(s). The school I work at has some D9 orgs that are part of a citywide chapter and some D9 chapters that are school specific.

That is the case for Alpha Phi Alpha. Sigma Chapter is essentially Boston Citywide and Rho Nu Chapter is specific to Harvard, MIT, and Tufts.

AKA is similar, with Epsilon Chapter being citywide (Babson College, Bentley College, Boston College, Boston University, Brandeis University, Emerson College, Emmanuel College, Pine Manor College, Simmons College, Suffolk University and Tufts University); Lambda Upsilon serving MIT, Harvard, and Wellesley; and Iota Gamma at Northeastern solely.

Yeah, a few years ago we stopped doing citywide chapters. And wanted to try and focus more on individual chapters. If there’s no available chapter at someone’s school (and within a certain radius), we would bring them in through regionals.
