Hurricane Irma

Anyone else tracking news on Irma?

I have one family member in the Miami area, but she left a few days ago to stay with friends near Atlanta. I think most of the colleges, if not all, are closed this week, or at least until the storm passes through.

My friend posted on FB that he took in an abandoned dog yesterday that supposedly was left behind; it's well-mannered and trained, so it had to have belonged to somebody.

But I haven't been able to find out any info on how bad the FLA Keys got it. I hope everyone stays safe there.

We're in the later path here in NW Georgia. Get this: Shorter University has ordered all its students out of the dorms as of today. They have a lot of international and OOS students (including Floridians) and I don't know what they'll do.

I have a sister who evacuated on Wednesday. She has a house on the beach in the Keys. My daughter's MIL is in Naples. She is hunkered down with her best friend. She said they have the house boarded with steel. I am very concerned about her since she did not evacuate. Not sure how far the house is from the beach so no idea if she is at risk with the storm surge. I also have a sister in Naples but have no details on their situation.

Are they directing the students to a shelter they've set up? If they're just ordering them out without providing a safer alternative, I absolutely don't get it.

My stepbrother is in Tampa and is riding out the storm there. I wish he left, but we'll see what his situation looks like in the morning when the brunt of the storm blows over him.

My brother's best friend lives in the Keys, but him and his fiance went north to Jacksonville earlier in the week. I'm not sure they're going to have much to return to, though.

A friend's elderly mother is also in the Tampa Bay area. Her other son is a 15 minute drive away, but she refuses to leave her house. Hope she's ok, but it seems like she's ready for the worst to hit her.

A friend lives in Puerto Rico, but he said he was fine after it passed by. I think the opposite side of the island got hit worse than where he is.

A friend from Islamorada left Labor Day weekend but will be riding the end of Irma in a cabin in NW Georgia. The parents of other friends (XO & AOPi alumnae) left their condo in Naples to go back to their house in Ohio, but are worried about what they'll come back to. Another XO friend in Tampa will hunker down with her husband and toddler. Her house is on a hill so hoping that helps.

And have a friend, freelance producer for the Weather Channel, who's in Miami with reporter Mike Seidel. In the thick of it!

I own a condo on Fort Lauderdale beach. It's in a high rise so I am not too worried. I am more worried about my 2 close friends in Key West that opted to stay and ride out the storm.

My in-laws live near West Palm Beach. They chose to stay. So far, they are safe, although they have lost internet. (TEH HORRORZ!)

Jill, I have a very dear and old pal who lives there and he and wife were going to hunker down! Other old class mates in Sun City, but headed North, one in nursing home in Tampa, not sure of, one N W of Orlando, so far so good! Know there are others but not sure where they are in Fl. All I can do is pray for them!!!
