Most fraternities at any campus

I did a thread on the Universities with the most NPC sororities ever on campus which brough a lot of comments so I thought I would try if for fraternities. Much more difficult as the fraternities are not nearly so organized and structured as the ladies. At the risk of offending some group, I took the 58 fraternities which have historically rushed against each other, all of which have been members of the N.I.C. most of the time since that confederation was instituted.

The institutions with the highest number of these groups ever chartered:

1 51 University of Illinois
2 49 University of Michigan
Pennsylvania State University
4 48 Cornell University
5 46 University of Wisconsin
6 45 University of California, Berkley
Ohio State University
8 42 University of Pennsylvania
9 41 Purdue University
10 39 University of Washington

Not surprising 29 groups (one-half) have chartered chapters at all ten schools. Fifty of the 58 have had chapters at least five of the above.

Currently Beta Theta Pi, Delta Upsilon and Pi Kappa Alpha have actively operating chapters at all ten schools. With nine active chapters and a colony are Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Sigma and Sigma Phi Epsilon. With nine active chapters are Alpha Epsilon Pi, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Chi and Zeta Psi. A disclaimer here as this last paragraph is almost subject to change daily, the way the fraternities have been adding and deleting!

Thanks for the info!!

You are correct as they come and go.

I figured LXA would rank up there fairly high.

All that you mentioned did have LXA at one time or another.

oldu,

With your information, can you determine which of the top ten NIC campuses have also had all five NPHC fraternities? (Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, Iota Phi Theta)

I think all of them have chapters of all five, except possibly Iota Phi Theta at University of Washington. Some may be city-wide chapters rather than exclusively at that particular institution. Can anyone from Iota Phi Theta confirm this information?

Tom --

The Lambda Chi Alpha site appears to be somewhat out-of-date. However, I think the chapters at both California and Wisconsin are inactive.

Others with eight chapters are Alpha Sigma Phi, Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Kappa Psi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Nu. Again, subject to rapid change.

For what it is worth, three more fraternities have joined the NIC bringing the number of organizations to 71.

oldu - I really appreciate your posting all this information regarding GLO history. It is all quite interesting.

Would you mind confirming which 58 fraternities you used in your comparison? Based on your criteria, "the 58 fraternities which have historically rushed against each other, all of which have been members of the N.I.C. most of the time since that confederation was instituted", I come up with 54 NIC fraternities (listed below in black) which seem to fit that description. I am speculating that you are including former NIC members Kappa Sigma and Phi Delta Theta in your comparison as well. If so, by my calculations, that would bring the number of fraternities used in the comparison to 56 (54 current NIC members plus 2 former members). As such, I am missing two NIC chapters. At the same time, I have identified seventeen current NIC members (listed below in red) that based on your criteria, might have been excluded. So I would guess that two of the red highlighted fraternities were included as well? Or maybe some other combination (i.e. faith based interest fraternities)? Thanks.

TSteven:

I included Alpha Gamma Rho, Alpha Gamma Sigma, FarmHouse & Triangle on my list.

With Beta Theta Pi at Michigan closed, that leaves only Delta Upsilon and Pi Kappa Alpha with active chapters at all.

I think I got it now. These are the 58 fraternities used in the comparison. Since Kappa Sigma and Phi Delta Theta are no longer members of the NIC, neither were part of the comparison. Thanks.
