Thanks for pointing this out, Shellfish. I've always been intrigued by The Machine, so I just might have to watch this!

New question:

Two Julias played a large role in Kappa Delta's early years. One is obviously founder Julia Tyler. Who is the other one?

Julia Vaughan.

Next question: Who was the first national president?

Actually, the first woman elected was Charlotte McKinney, but she was unable to serve because of personal matters, so Genevieve Venable was the first actually to fill the role.

New question: Who was sometimes incorrectly counted as a founder? (And it's not Eunice Spiers.)

I remember it being Julia Vaughan. Not sure though.

I was thinking Kathleen Riley, who's given as a founder in Baird's editions as late as 1920 (possibly later, but that's the latest with full view in Google Books).

Anyone else with a question? I don't really have one at the moment.

New question:

In what year was the Founders' Memorial Bench placed on the Farmville campus?

1928, I believe.

ETA: New question. (If 1928 is not the correct answer, then it looks like we'll have two active questions at once.)
How many official mascots has Kappa Delta had, and what are they?

I don't know how many but I'll put one of them out there; the katydid.

lol, Leslie! One of the reasons I asked this question is because I was always confused by what is an official mascot and what isn't. I could've sworn that the teddy bear was an official mascot when I joined, just because our chapter used it all the time. The KD chapter on the campus I'm on now doesn't recognize the teddy bear at all.

So, this is one of those teaser questions - I really don't have an answer!

On the KD website it lists all four....

Katydid, Teddy Bear, Dagger, and Nautilus Shell

Have there ever been anything other than these?

Oh! Okay. Well, then I'd have to say that we've only had two mascots: katydid and teddy bear. The katydid has been around for ages and was the only mascot back in the dark ages when I was a collegian. So, personally, I don't recognize the teddy bear. lol It's funny that your current campus has rejected it too. Is there an Alpha Phi chapter on campus? If so, that might be why. The teddy bear really is their mascot and I believe it has been for a very long time. It's right that it belongs to them because it fits within their symbols (Ursa Major). Since it was introduced as a KD symbol, I've always felt that it was a rip off of Alpha Phi.

Anyway, the others that kdizzy mentioned (dagger and nautilus shell) are our symbols not mascots.

I was trying not to hog the answer earlier and now I've more than hogged it. Sorry!

New Question

Okay here's one that you won't find the answer to in any books. I came upon it accidentally so it might require some digging.

A certain Kappa Delta song, often used during Preference parties, has its origins in two songs. One is by a female singer. The other is by a late 1960's/early 1970's musical teen heartthrob.

What's the KD song?
Who's the female singer?
What's the name of the female singer's song?
Who's the heartthrob?
What's the name of the heartthrob's song?

Hint: Both songs have some of the same tunes and some of the same lyrics.

ETA: Please don't post the answers if you know them right off the bat. Let's see how good our GC KDs are at playing detective.
