Comedian Steve Harvey may be a college dropout, but that didn’t stop him from offering plenty of down-to-earth advice to the 581 students graduating Friday at Southern University’s spring commencement.
"If you are going to be successful, you will rise before the rest of them and you will go to bed long after the rest of them are already gone," said Harvey, who hosted the popular television series "It’s Showtime at the Apollo" for seven years.
Harvey, who still stars in his own sit-com on the Warner Brothers network, noted that he normally gets up at 4 a.m. and often works until 11 p.m. or later.
And he stressed that luck is no substitute for hard work.
"The more you do, the more you will get. You’re not going to hit the Lotto. Quit playing them numbers; you ain’t going to hit the Lotto. Your chances of winning are one in several million, and you probably ain’t the one," Harvey joked.
The comedian told the students that the real lessons of life are just beginning.
"It’s your dream and vision that makes you what you are. It ain’t got nothing to do with that piece of paper they’re going to give you in a few minutes," Harvey said.
Harvey told the grads to find something that they enjoy doing and pursue it as hard as they can.
Too may people wind up in jobs that they hate, working for a boss that they can’t stand, at pay that they abhor.
"You can’t stand the environment (at work), but you get up and go every day. And you can’t be mad at nobody but yourself, because you made the decision to put yourself there," Harvey said.
Harvey told the group of mostly black students that racial discrimination is no longer an excuse for failure.
"Your color can never be your excuse. It should be your reason for succeeding," Harvey said.
Harvey urged the young male graduates to maintain a respect for women.
Harvey said he’s disturbed by the degrading references to women used by many popular rap artists.
"It is our tearing down of one another that is the biggest cause of our failure as a people, and nobody tears us down like the rap gang," Harvey said.
