Interesting History

Every so often, I fall down the greek research rabbit hole and find interesting facts. While it is completely possible that I am the only one interested in these facts, but I like to share! So here is the Kappa Delta history thread.

Recently I was researching our former chapter at Saint Lawrence University. In October of 1921, Pan Pasia, a local organization, was granted a charter from National Kappa Delta to form our chapter. They had over four decades of successful existence at St. Lawrence including winning the highest scholarship on campus eight years in a row. However in the late 1960s problems arose in regards to race and membership selection. In 1968, three sisters disaffiliated "on the basis of dissatisfaction with the beliefs and morals of Kappa Delta. After much personal struggle, the girls refused to live under the domination of an organization which told them what color and skin pigment a friend must be." (KDS Linkedin profile) The chapter followed suit and formed Kappa Delta Sigma in February 1969. On their initial Pledge Saturday, they received 25 new members including one who was not approved to join Kappa Delta due to her race.

On page 100 of the Gridiron yearbook are pictures of the newly formed Kappa Delta Sigma sorority. This includes former Kappa Delta members holding signs with KD crossed out and KDS written underneath. There is also a thank you to the community "for their support, their cooperation and especially their understanding during the past year."
