How old is too old?

Hey everyone, I'm a junior, class of 2010 and I really, really regret never joining a fraternity. I'm considering rushing this spring, even though it would mean getting hazed by guys younger than me.

How old do you think is too old to join?

We rush and initiate juniors all the time, mind you the dynamic at our school is a bit different from the rest. We're a Canadian chapter at a university where the more than half of the school is on co op, meaning alternating terms of school and work, and we are unregulated and unrecognized by the university. So not only are fraternities not such a big thing in Canada as they are in the states, we can't hold events or advertise on campus. And as such we typically have very few freshmen rush, we mostly get sophomores and juniors, even seniors. It's never to late to rush, but I would advise you to stay away from fraternities that would haze you. At our chapter we treat our pledges like royalty, compared to what I have seen at other chapters. They have no direct responsibilities to the chapter, no party duties, no clean up duties, nothing we wouldn't want to be forced upon ourselves. Thats just how we operate.

It really depends on your school and the chapter.

The bigger, more competitive a school, the less likely you are to get a bid.

My advice is go to any pre-rush recruitment events (if they do that at your school) and go through rush if you have something to offer. You have nothing to lose.

It doesn't matter, for the most part, how long you have been in school just how long you have left. My fraternity just brothered up a kid who was in his 4th year with another year or so left to go. If you are a good kid and could bring something to the table it really shouldn't matter
