Sigma Chi Suing George Mason U.

Sigma Chi is suing George Mason University. The lawsuit challenges GMU's actions regarding the GMU chapter. An ABC affiliate reports the story:

http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/1007/466601.html

Excerpt from the station's report:

The university's Sigma Chi chapter alleges in the lawsuit that the school's decision to shut the group down violated its members' free speech and due-process rights.

Isn't GMU a private school? If so then students have no rights, the S.C. has made this very clear, it sucks to see you're brothers get shut down, but theirs some things you can and can't win.

No, its a public school. It started out as part of the University of Virginia but is now separate. Still public, though.

Whoa, I had no idea Sigma Chi had been shut down - must go read article... When I was at Mason, they were one of the stronger chapters so that makes me kinda sad if they're not allowed to be there anymore. But Mason has been cracking down on Greeks and students in general for the past several years.

And Mystic is right, it is a state school - hence why it was so cheap to attend

ETA: Ok, read the article. Sounds a bit unfair to me. All this hazing stuff is getting way out of hand in terms of what is considered hazing. Girls have to sing at recruitment, how is a serenade outside the library hazing? I really hope Sigma Chi is successful in suing GMU again...

I mean, there's always "that chapter" that girls are warned about at parties, but Sigma Chi was never one of them.

Pretty extreme behavior on the part of the university. Typical arrogance. We all owe something to Sigma Chi for standing up.
We lost our ATO chapter here recently for hazing. Although FSU's administration doesn't act like G-Mason's, some of the circumstances sound uncomfortably familiar. ATO alumni were not allowed to provide representation at the judicial hearing, and - I am not making this up - even though the individual ATO brothers who were charged with hazing were found not guilty of violating the Student Conduct Code, the dean of students decided to punish the fraternity anyway (off until at least 2009) as a "learning experience."
