I'd consider checking it out in the spring. Verify this with Greek Life, but I believe Georgia Southern's IFC holds a full spring recruitment in that all chapters take part and it's structured like fall formal. At some schools, not all organizations take part in spring rush. Should you wait until fall, my understanding is that it's not uncommon for guys at Georgia Southern to rush and receive bids as sophomores. I know quite a few who have, so you shouldn't be penalized based on class standing.
There will probably be fewer people going through spring recruitment, resulting in smaller pledge classes. Some see this as a pro, others as a con. Hopefully, you'll meet and get to know some fraternity members during this coming fall semester and they'll advise you on spring pledging versus fall pledging.
