Beginning a Local Sorority

Hi all,

I'm interested in starting a local sorority that is mainly service oriented. Do I need to register with anyone or anything? Or can I simply just come up with a name, rules, and such?

I'm in negotiations with my school, and need to know more before I am allowed to progress. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks =)

Talk to your school about what is needed to progress. Then, search through these threads for tips.

What is wrong with the current sororities at your school?

There are many NATIONAL service sororities. If you really want to do service instead of spending a lot of time thinking up ritual/constitution/letters/colors, why don't you start a colony of one of those?

I see no mention of a group of interested women in your post, so a colony would be a lot easier for a one-woman operation to get off the ground.

Hi, I'm also interested in starting a local sorority. I have a few people who are interested in helping me start it up. I was wondering how are your plans going in your quest to beging a sorority?

Quick note -- if you haven't started your organization, you're not a "soror" of anything yet.

As 33 mentioned, there are NATIONAL service sororities already in existence.

Two that immediately come to mind are Gamma Sigma Sigma and Omega Phi Alpha.

ETA: Google is your friend.

Is it "I want to start a local" time already? Do yourself a favor and don't start from scratch.

Best advice: do everything possible to maintain a positive relationship with the univeristy and start by writing a constitution. neither tasks are particularly fun, but both are integral to getting recognized by your campus and being able to function as an organization.

I cannot speak for the others, but Beta Sigma Phi is wonderfully receptive to starting new chapters. I just started one at my college and we are in the process of affiliating with the school. Keep in mind that we are primarily a social sorority, but service projects are encouraged just like they are in NPC sororities.

Definitely Google the organizations the other members have listed here and try to find the ones that fit well with your needs. I agree that it will be much less stressful for you if you colonize a chapter of a current organization. You will have a built in support system of sisters, a set list of rituals and rules, and the respect that comes with a nationally known name, which is especially important if your campus already has Greek life.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

I am also a sister of Beta Sigma Phi!! We are really receptive to starting new chapters. You just need seven charter women. Our site is www.betasigmaphi.org.

The national coordinator of Omega Phi Alpha's expansions program is a personal friend of mine (and obviously my sister); I'd be happy to introduce interested GCers to her. We're somewhat selective about where we invest in new chapters because we want to make sure the campus will be a good fit for us long term. But we're always happy to meet with interested potential colonists and talk through the possibility of bringing OPA to that campus.
