Affiliate GLO's?
How do you feel about Local's who affiliate with National GLO's?
As in, they have the same colors, mascot, motto, and a pretty darn close name? (Ex. Chi Omega Alpha, Delta Theta)

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. My only question is why imitate when you can petition for charter and be the real thing?

If it's just one thing that's similar, well, it can happen. I mean, there are only so many colors out there.
But ... take a look at this thread:

Okay, the reason behind my previous question is the sorority that I may pledge this fall seems quite similar to Delta Zeta. They have a similar name, mascot, and colors. My boyfriend is very tight with their group yet, he doesn't know their history. Like, if they lost their DZ chapter, or if they're in the process of converting over to DZ..so I'm just lost..and confused. :P It's seems on my campus National's do not stay. *nods* We used to have a Chi Omega chap (now Chi Omega Alpha, a local), and we're only holding onto Tau Kappa Epsilon barely, and then we have a tri-state fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi, the rest are locals that are super small, super weak, and super quiet. I mean, if the glo I'm thinking about pledging is in the process of getting a chapter, well, I'll be right there with them (c'mon, having sisters all around would be awesome, you have to admit), but, if they had lost their chapter or is just another unorganized local (they are here at least) I'm not even going to bother and continue as a pro-greek GDI :P

I think the thing to find out is their history. In this thread I mentioned earlier, I know for a fact that AXD never had a chapter there, so they weren't de-chartered. However, if a group lost its charter, it wouldn't offend me if it formed a local very similar to the national - it would be hard to give up the symbols dear to you. It would offend me if they were straight-out copying in the hopes of some day getting a charter - they may never, and then they're just trading off of our good name. Make any sense?
I wouldn't worry if they lost their charter. It could have been years ago, and the problems are now gone. Even if it was more recently, the sisters could have worked hard to turn itself around. The fact that you don't consider them a small, quiet chapter speaks volumes - it sounds like they have their act together.
And there is the possibility that their similarities with DZ are coincidental. Give them the benefit of the doubt until you know for sure.

Not to mention, it may not always be the local that is "imitating" the national so to speak. Ask 33girl about this, there was a thread about it way way back which involved a local sorority at a UW school which was founded a few years before her national. There were many similarities, a lot ot the time it just may be coincidental. There are only so many colors and flowers and mascots that you can choose from, you know? Unless we start making our own up like "The Monkey Bird" or something.
[edit]
Oddly enough, my local shares many similarities with our university. When we broke away from the national we were part of many years ago, the members didn't really know what to do with all this. We have the same mascot as our university (panther), similar colors (old gold and black), the university colors are yellow and black, and we share a few other similar things.

Don't worry, I'm going to go by some of your suggestions on this Thankfully, tomorrow I'm actually going to be canoeing (sp?) w/a honorary of the sorority I'm going to pledge, so, I may be able to get at least -some- of my questions answered.
(Plus, I'm just REALLY hoping there is a connection between them and DZ!!)
