Pledge shot during frat house brawl

An 18-year-old student is in stable condition after he was shot in the leg at a Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity event early Friday morning, officials said.

Eli Cohen, Kappa Alpha president, said there was a private event hosted by the chapter at their house, 906 N. First Ave., which was open to members and their girlfriends.

In a statement issued by Cohen, he explained two men who were not invited showed up at the fraternity house, reports stated.

Members of the fraternity were escorting the uninvited men out of the house but the men refused to leave. A fight then escalated in front of the house at 1:16 a.m., reports stated.

Members of the fraternity tried to mediate the incident, but another fight erupted and gunshots were fired, said Dallas Wilson, Tucson Police Department spokesman.

The unwelcome guests assaulted several members of the fraternity before gunshots were fired, said Cohen, a history senior.

A new member of the fraternity was shot in the leg, and Tucson Fire Department arrived on scene to treat him, Wilson said.

“He’s in very stable condition, he’s back on his feet and able to walk,” Cohen said about the victim.

The name of the victim cannot be given because the case is still under investigation, and the report still needs to be approved by a detective before information can be released, Wilson said.

At this time, police are still investigating the nature of the assault incidences and are unsure how many persons will be suspects or charged in the case, Wilson said.

Cohen said he is waiting to get the green light from the Kappa Alpha Order National Administrative Office before he releases the names of the victims of the assault.

There was no evidence to show the incident may be gang related.

TPD and the University of Arizona Police Department are investigating the case.

You know, I've seen many a heated discussion at a fraternity house turn ugly when debating which of the two brands of smokeless tobacco is more fratty - Kodiak, or Copenhagen.

I'm just kidding...I'm glad to hear the guy is ok.
