Exclamation Alpha Tau Alpha

Hi I am the national head per say of ALPHA TAU ALPHA, we are a unaffiliated/ unincorporated local fratermity at Johnson & Wales University. We have recently found out via internet that another fraternity ATA also exist and has recently went nationally. It is some sort of tech/honors society. This comes as a shock because we are in the process of incorporating at this time. We have intrest groups in North carolina and Rhode Island and hoped to incorporate nationally but stay unafilliated. Our ALPHA chapter is considering changing the name, what do you think???

I personally want to keep ATA and possibly come up with a one letter name as Farmhouse or ARCADIA did.

What do you think? What would you do?

P.S : I also heard that if we ever wanted to be affilliated would would have to change our colors because another fraternity lready uses Navy Blue and GOLD????? IS this True???

(PS, I think it is ACACIA)

Well, you obviously could continue with ATA. There is a local Pi Kappa Phi fraternity here, not affiliated with the national Pi Kappa Phi, but they were founded before the national. Soooo...you'd have to look at foinding dates if something lega l were to come up. I think your best bet would be to come up with a different name/letters, but incorporate ATA in your pin/ritual/pledge book/history stuff.

I personally really like the one name orgs, they're something different.

Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority is a different sorority than Delta Phi Epsilon National Foreign Service group. They do not seem to have a problem with it......

Also, if the other group with your name is an honorary or professional organization, it's fine I think. No one will confuse you.

no one has the market on colors. MANY MANY groups use blue and gold. Youa re OK, there!

I agree with everyone else. I don't see too much of a problem with sharing letters.

The Delta Phi Epsilon example is a good one. Not only is there a Delta Phi Epsilon Professional Foreign Service Fraternity, their sisters are the Delta Phi Epsilon Professional Foreign Service Sorority. And of course Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority is different, too.

At my school, we didn't have the general sorority, just the professional frat and sorority.

Anyway, point being that if both ATA's were general fraternities, there may be a problem, but they seem like two completely different orgs.

Good luck!

The only place that the Delta Phi Epsilon foreign service fraternity and sorority really exists at is Georgetown.

They are both chartered at and have members on other campuses. Not many, but more than just Georgetown.
