Terminology Confusion

I plan on rushing in the fall so I've been researching all of the sororities on my campus. On the Kappa Kappa Gamma website, it says: "A reference is required to pledge Kappa Kappa Gamma and chapters have the responsibility to obtain reference information about each potential new member." This struck me as odd since our school says that recommendations are NOT required to rush.

Is the required reference different from the optional recommendation? Or are the terms being used interchangeably? If they're different, is the reference something I should worry about now, or only if I were to go through rush and be matched with KKG? From the way it's worded, it seems as if the chapter itself is responsible for coming up with a reference.

Maybe I'm reading way too much into it. I'm a science major so I overthink everything haha. That said, I would really like to be prepared for all the houses this fall and would hate to be cut from a house I loved b/c I was missing something. Any information you ladies could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not a KKG but->

You would only have to worry about this if you were bid by KKG.
And even then, YOU, wouldn't have to worry about it so much as the chapter would. Whether they simply have someone shake your hand and sign a form or actually have you sit down with an alumna, I don't know. But I wouldn't worry about it.

This isn't the same thing as a rush rec.

/sorry for the crash

Incorrect information

Actually, Drolefill, it IS the same thing as a Recruitment Recommendation (also known as a Letter of Reference).

If you go through Recruitment with a Letter of Reference already submitted to your local Kappa chapter by a Kappa alumna or undergraduate, that letter will serve as BOTH your Letter of Reference for Recruitment purposes, AND if you are extended a bid to KKG, it will also serve as your Letter of Reference for becoming a New Member of our organization.

If you go through Recruitment without a Letter of Reference, and you are extended a bid to KKG, then the process for obtaining a Letter of Reference for becoming a New Member will be handled by the chapter, and you will be given information about the process at that time.

All of this is in the way of saying that it is beneficial for you to go ahead and get the Letter of Reference sent in from the outset. But, of course, that Letter of Reference in no way guarantees you a bid (or even invitations to certain Recruitment rounds) from KKG.

Please let me know if this is unclear. Thanks for your question! Best of luck to you during the Recruitment process.
