Ruby's one of my waitresses at the bar. See, my bar's kind of different from the others -- it's a "local" themed bar, full of aloha spirit I like to think. Everyone but Ruby has pretty much grown up here, are mindful and knowledgeable of "local" customs and mannerisms.
Ruby's Puerto Rican from Brooklyn. My boss hired her because she had been recommended by one of his friends, and we were shorthanded last summer when a coupla girls quit and I was on vacation. We had a hard time getting along with her and vice versa.
See, the way my bar works is, if it's busy -- we all finish and leave at the same time. If it's slow, we get to go home according to who clocked in first. Ruby was the last girl to arrive for work, so she automatically had to close. I saw her packing up her shit at 12:45am and when I asked what she was doing, she said she was getting ready to leave because it was slow.
I told her to put her shit back because another girl was going home first. It's only fair. She's like, "My BF's on his way to pick me up already." This wasn't the first time she did shit like this.
That was the fucking last straw.
So I told her, "Hurry up and clock the fuck out because tonight's your last night. Your paycheck and whatever charge tips you had tonight will be mailed to you."
If my owner's not there, I'm considered the bar manager regardless of whether I'm on the floor serving or behind the bar. He wasn't there, but I called him right away to tell him what happened. He said it was fine..."If you can hire em, you can fire em too!"
No one's really sad to see her go. She was dead weight anyway.
I wanted to say other shit, but I had thirsty customers to serve and she really wasn't worth it.
But yeah, my interview with United Airlines is tomorrow and it's for a Data Marketing position at the Honolulu Airport. I love my bar, but even at 25 I'm already feeling like I'm too old for this shit. Years from now, I don't want to be a 40-some year old mama-san still bartending.
