Smile father of University of Arkansas Freshman rushing this year

Good morning, my son plans to rush at Arkansas in a few weeks and I am just interested in what he will need to be successful.

OK, I had a laugh when I read this. Sometimes things don't translate well in print- I read this as the Father (of a freshman) was rushing!!!

Good luck to your son. That is an amazing school at which to be Greek. One important thing he needs to do is figure out if he has any friends / acquaintances in the chapters on campus. Already knowing (and being on friendly terms with) men in the chapters always helps.

I went to an officer and adviser training program at U of Ark not too many years back. Fantastic campus. Our chapter there seemed beyond decent.

Great minds think alike. I too read the title and thought it was weird that the father was going to rush.

Greek Life is very strong at U of A!
Most fraternity pledge classes hover around 50 or so and some chapters have 150-200 members. Many fraternities either have newer houses or are in the process of upgrading their houses.
Connections are always helpful especially for some houses. Tell him to be himself and he'll find a place!

Okay - I have a few moments to get you started. What your son will need to be successful in rush? Good people skills is probably the most important. The ability to engage in conversation. Being likable. Just to give you a sense of this, recently, an alumni member of my fraternity died. Here's a sample of some message traffic about him:

"She told me that N++++++ owned a bookkeeping business and that he had many clients who "adored him." This did not surprise me at all. We all remember N+++++ as outgoing with great people skills. Mike is correct. He was a dang good guy."

Get the picture. Hopefully, your son already has what he needs in this regard.

But here's kind of a mental checklist on whether you son can successfully rush: (1) perspective on what is important and what is not important (good grades are important); (2) good manners toward everyone (hopefully he already has them); (3) good study habits (ability to budget his time); (4) drinking and drugs (don't be stupid); (5) some basic ability to withstand peer pressure (see drinking and drugs); (6) clothes - if needed, get new ones (whatever students are wearing at Arkansas); (7) ability to do his laundry; (8) ability to pay the dues and financial commitment he will be making. That kind of stuff.

Basically your son will need good grades, have partcipated in sports or other extras at his school.

Present well as a young man.

GLOs check for grades and info on incoming students.

Un Ark. has an outstanding Fraternity system with a lot of great chapters.

Tell him to look around and make all visitations. It is a two way street for both.

Best of luck out to him!!!
