Speaking of skaters...

When I was in school there was a very persistent rumor going around that Debi Thomas had pledged ASA. This was impossible because not only did we not have a chapter at Stanford, we didn't have one in all of CA. Supposedly she said after a competition "thanks to all my sisters in Alpha Sig."

Does anyone know of any locals around the late 80's in that neck of the woods that might have gone by "Alpha Sig"? I'm curious.

I just checked our int'l website's list of Famous Thetas and she's not listed. I'll double-check with HQ and repost.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is for sure a Delta Gamma. Wherever you read that she wasn't was incorrect. She is an alum of the Sigma Chapter of Delta Gamma at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL (one of the Big 10 schools). If you look on our national website (www.deltagamma.org) you will find her listed as one of our esteemed famous alums.

My Delta Gamma sister is correct.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is indeed a Delta Gee!

A few up-and-coming, somewhat famous Thetas to add to the list:

Melissa Stark , sideline reporter for Monday Night Football

Amy Holmes - on air political commentator on many news shows during the Gore/Bush 2000 election fracas, print and TV journalist, now a host on BET's issues program. (I can personally verify this one - she was initiated in my chapter during my senior year.)

As far as I can tell they only have chapters in the USA. Did they vote to make him an honorary member and he was too polite to decline?

It is sort of the same process as the Girl Scouts do with the First Lady being the "honorary president" of their organization...by virtue of the fact that he is "the Pope" he is considered a member.

I am good friends with their ED, I will email him and ask

Sandra Day O'Connor

I've done a little late night sleuthing. . .

According to her bio, SDO'C was born in 1930. She did undergrad and law school at Stanford - graduated in 1950 and '52, respectively. The Stanford chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta was closed from 1944 until 1978. So, she's not a Theta. (And, until recently, we haven't done many alumnae initiates, so I'm pretty sure that's not the case.)

I think that all Stanford sororities were closed in 1944, so she may not be Greek. . .(or at least not an undergrad initiate).

Anyone else have info?

There are tons of sites out there that list her as being Greek, with no affiliation given. I've also found a list on the Northeast Georgia Alumnae Panhellenic Council website including her as a Pi Phi!)

I've seen a number of sites that list Sandra Day O'Connor as a Theta or a Pi Phi but as far as I can tell, no credible ones.

Michelle Kwan went to UCLA and the Gamma Phi website there makes no mention of her, which you'd think they would if she was an alum of their chapter (or still in it!). Plus, as mentioned, the Gamma Phi website doesn't list her either.

Greek 101 has a list as well http://www.greek101.com/new/lounge/grk_famous.stm but I'm not sure where the information comes from or how accurate it is...I would have to check with one of my sisters to find that out. But if it is an accurate list, it's interesting and lengthy as well...

Not quite up to date, plus it has a couple of errors and omissions in it as well.

Warren Buffett - Alpha Sigma Phi - Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Corporation.

Willard Scott - Alpha Sigma Phi - Former Today Show weatherman and the first Ronald McDonald. (He's listed as Alpha Sigma Pi.)

Looking at that list I noticed a few things that surprised me.

1) didn't realize the following famous people were in sororities or fraternities:

Jada Pinkett Smith AKA

Jennifer Garner Pi Phi

Nick Lachey SAE (when did he go to college? and where?)

Pope John Paul II Phi Kappa Theta (the pope went to college, an american college no less. I'm confused now.)

2) seeing names of people who are 'supposedly' famous and not knowing who they are but supposedly they are your sisters.

Rosanne Rogers Alpha Delta Pi Actress

Kathy Nail Alpha Delta Pi Actress

I have no idea who these actresses are. I guess I need to do a yahoo search.

3) learning about other famous sisters that you didn't know about

Sherri Bledsoe Halford Alpha Delta Pi VP of Production at Capital Records

Lu Parker Alpha Delta Pi Former Miss USA (although I don't think she actually won. I could have sworn I read that she was a runner up, does anyone know for sure? Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

This one I can verify! She was in the Adelphean and attended Convention that year, tiara & all!

She was from South Carolina, but I forget which school. Clemson?

Edited to correct: Lu Parker is an alumna of Zeta Sigma Chapter, College of South Carolina. She has a website at www.luparker.com.

Brianna you made me curious too, so I looked! Rosanna Rogers is a news anchor in Houston and Kathy Nail is Kate Capshaw's real name.

I think that's how a lot of the "fake" famous Greeks pop up - we forget that actors & actresses are not often under their real names. Someone with that as their actual name gets mistaken for the famous person. Plus some of the names are really common - in the case of Justice O'Connor, I'm sure there were quite a few "Sandra Day"s out there.

Actually, she was only at UCLA for about two years and then transfered up to Stanford and I think she might be back at UCLA. I know she wasn't a member at UCLA and I don't think they have a chapter at Stanford, do they?

Amalia17...yes, Dixie Carter is a Tri-Delta from the University of Tennessee.

What's odd is that they (the greek101 website) listed both Kathy Nail and Kate Capshaw, probably because I would have never in a million, billion years guessed that Kathy Nail is aka Kate Capshaw.

I don't know if this one has been posted but Bill Clinton pledged Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity Mu Alpha Chapter (Georgetown) in undergrad. A lot of the presidents are frat, but he's the only one I know of that actually pledged undergrad.

russellwarshay is correct about Presidents

Bush I, Bush II, Dan Quayle (veep), Gerald Ford all were undergrad members of a social fraternity. Carter went to the Naval Academy; Nixon played football at Whittier but no fraternities there; L. Johnson pledged a local fraternity in Texas (later a national chapter); Eisenhower went to West Point; Truman didn't go to college. The only one who attended a school with socials and didn't join is Clinton, but he did pledge APO.

Clinton went to Georgetown, where they didn't have social fraternties.

Completely off topic, but if any of you all get the new Greek 101 catalog, be sure to check out all of the mistakes in the back under famous greeks. I think they went out, picked some famous folks, said they were from XYZ, and published it.

My boyfriend is originally from Ohio & his mom went to Miami of Ohio. He really likes "boy bands" and especially has respect for Nick Lachey because he, too, is from Ohio. So last night, we were watching Newlyweds, & looked up online where he went to college. It didn't say anything about him graduating or about a fraternity, but there is SAE at Miami of Ohio, so it's plausible. As for when he went to college, he was born in 1973 (according to the same source), so he probably attended in the early 90s.
