Using Greek letters in names/on items

Hey all -

I recently was on Facebook and I saw a thing where some group used a sigma in place of an "e" in some of their lettering and got backlash about it because sigma is really equivalent to an "s."

Is that really a big deal? I've definitely seen some Greek groups or at least letting shops do that before, but I never thought about the significance of it.

I have seem Phi Mu called "PM" even though Phi is the equivalent to "F". drives me nuts

It's not unusual to see organizations making a play on words or type/font using their Greek letters in place of Latin letters. I would think it's up to each individual organization to decide if they don't want their letters represented that way.

If some overly academic person is stressing out over a t-shirt that "technically" says "As Good As Gthld", then they have too much time on their hands or simply don't understand how to be clever in graphic design.

Well, the most famous of these is the Television Show GREEK, that you used Sigmas in place of the Es.

I *think* I've seen a few places where the Omega Psi Phi's have used an Omega in place of a Q in an English word, but that's pretty unique to them

Even worse....they're also using everyday objects in place of Latin letters!!

It drives me nuts and I don’t think it’s cute or clever. Especially the situation you described since there is an actual letter E in the Greek alphabet. I’d rather not have people thinking I’m a member of Alpha Epsilon Alpha, thank you.

That was my thought as well.

I just read a thing, like I said, and to me it didn't seem like a big deal, but I guess to some people it is.

This actually just came up in a local group because it turns out a certain politician from our area has a tattoo of the Latin phrase, Invictus Maneo (I remain unvanquished). However, I guess he thought it would look “classier” to write it out in Greek letters. Or
something. From the angle of the photo, you can’t see how Invictus is spelled, but Maneo is spelled ΜΛΠΣΘ. So….Mlpsth? <facepalm>
