Got stuck in traffic on my way to Pittsburgh yesterday but I was behind a Sigma from Lock Haven! I love seeing my letters while out and about.

This evening, I found letters in the LAST place I'd expect to find them.

My father-in-law is in town, so my husband and I took him out to dinner. We got onto the topic of how my FIL and MIL met. I knew that MIL had started out at NYU and transferred to CCNY, while FIL had started at CCNY and transferred to NYU. They overlapped at NYU for one semester, and they met at a party during that semester.

This evening, I learned that the party was hosted by Alpha Phi Omega. (I understand that APO chapters generally don't have houses. I gather a few brothers had gotten an apartment together, and this is where the party was held.) My FIL was at the party because he's an APO. I've known the guy for sixteen years and I had no idea!

As if that weren't enough, there's the question of why my MIL was at the party. My FIL said, "She was there with a group of her sorority sisters." Knowing that there's a chapter of AEPhi at NYU, I asked if she had joined AEPhi. He told me that she was pledging a service sorority at NYU. I asked if it was Omega Phi Alpha, and he said that sounded right, but some googling tells me OPhiA wasn't even founded until after my MIL graduated, and OPhiA hasn't had a chapter at NYU or CCNY. In any case, MIL pledged a sorority but was never initiated.

I knew my GMIL was a member of Kappa Delta Pi (education honor society), and my husband has been inducted into a couple of Greek-letter honor societies, but I had no idea that my husband's parents were at all involved with greek life. At some point I'll ask my MIL what sorority she pledged ... and I think I'm going to need to be resuscitated if it turns out to be AEPhi

Yeah, OPA hasn't had any chapters in NY. I'm curious now too as to which sorority she was a part of!

My bet is Gamma Sigma Sigma. One of the founding chapters (Delta) (GSS was formed from the merger of 6 different groups from 7 different schools) was at NYU. Gamma Sigma Sigma was formed in October of 1952.

Omega Phi Alpha was actually formed in 1953, but didn't become National until 1967 (and it is actually a little more confusing than that) (see the wikipedia page).

And in regards to NYU & CCNY for GSS, CCNY got its own chapter of GSS in 1957 (Pi Chapter)

When did your FIL & MIL meet? And would your FIL like to get back involved with APO?

Yesterday I saw a girl with my Pi Beta Phi letters in silver blue on the back of her wine sweatshirt in downtown Evanston. I would have had to run to catch up with her to talk, so I let her go. Once every few years I'll see someone from the Northwestern chapter this way.

Then that evening back in the city, I saw a girl running with the words "Alpha Chi" running down her sweatpants vertically. I can sometimes go weeks without seeing anybody wearing anything Greek related, so seeing two in one day in different areas was surprizing.

- Texas Tech Pi Kappa Alpha car sticker
- Baylor IFC shirt on student - he doesn't belong to a fraternity "They were just giving out free t-shirts". Learned Sigma Chi lost their Baylor chapter in 2010.

So I know I mentioned that my rabidly anti-Greek friend was thinking about joining the Delts. Now He is a member of Sig Ep. Mind kind of blown, but I'm kind of jealous if it is a BMP chapter.

It could possibly be Gamma Sigma Sigma. My in-laws were in college in the early 1960s.

I never knew my FIL was an APO until we had that conversation. He is a Mason (as is my husband) and was very involved with his home chapter. AFAIK, he has had no involvement with APO in recent years - as I said, I've known him for 16 years and this was the first time I'd learned about his APO affiliation.

MIL is getting a brain-picking

I'm a member of a beer lovers' group here in Connecticut. Last night, we got together at a restaurant for a beer tasting. I got to talking with one of the other attendees. We discovered that we both know AEPhi's executive director, and suddenly he asked me, "Are you an AEPhi? My daughter was just selected as a TEC!" His daughter attended UConn.

Just came back from a service immersion trip in an invasion community called Monte Sinai about 30 min from Guayaquil, Ecuador. One of the year long volunteers that helped facilitate our retreat was a Kappa Alpha Theta!

Cute litte girl (maybe 15 mo.?) at the farmers market - pink and green dress with cartoon turtles and her name embroidered on the front. DZ ribbons in her hair. Mom had the coordinating pink and pink stripes with green ribbons diaper bag.
They do start young in the south....
