But the problem is its the mindset that only a "real man" WOULD put up with it. Hence the continuation of such behavior in the military (and related groups), fraternities, sports teams, etc.

So, if I don't want to take a test, I can just claim it's hazing. Cool!
But what if I don't want to take part in initiation? Wouldn't it be hazing to make me participate?

so if you don't want to do it, don't. if you feel like the activity will be a belittling experience or physically harm you, don't do it. the basic idea behind hazing is to not take part in a damaging activity. only the individual can decide what that means.
|
And the bolded is a perfect illustration of why this "definition" of hazing is so broad as to be virtually useless. Does your organization really define it this loosely?

I'm an initiate right now and I have experienced the same thing. Gifts at every meeting. Abosultely no hazing!

Giving and receiving respect is the opposite of hazing.

That is definitely the snake oil that's being sold, but it's so patently false it's unbelievable that people with more than an elementary education could fall for it. Women and children in re-education/labor/death camps and in all kinds of horrific circumstances all around the world have endured far worse for far longer. Taking a couple of licks from a paddle or eating worms looks pretty weenie in a real-world comparison, doesn't it? The idea that hazing is anything but a negative test for cajones is utter bs. Hazing is nothing but a weak-minded bully's cowardly attempt to build up his/her minuscule self-image and that of their diseased organization at others' expense.

Around 80% of frats I know on campus, haze. This process of "hazing" allows brothers to separate the de-pledges from the future brothers. Long story short, the twenty percent that don't "haze" receive zero respect and virtually do not exist. Hazing builds balls and eliminates cowards and weaklings. Only the strong survive and the weak can remain GDI or join a club. Continue the tradition and do not become that greek organization who lets anyone in. Set standards, uphold a respected reputation, and never tolerate disrespect.
goods420, Try telling that to the parents of those so-called "cowards and weaklings" who have died or sustained permanent injury due to hazing....doing, what did you call it? "Building balls" I'd like to see you explain your reasoning to just one set of parents who have lost a child. What a twit. You are the epitome of a stupid frat boy.

You might want to try using the Quote button. I kept trying to figure out why a Zeta was saying this:

No one on our campus does. Of course, our school is so small that if anyone did, the whole campus would know about it the next day.

I think the type of hazing that thegoods420 went through when he was pledging was over the line, but for a pledge to receive gifts, that is just stupid, what is the point of that, all you are doing is bribing them and they have no reason to respect you.

Someone obviously does not know anything about sarcasm.
I know my chapter is getting their charter this weekend and we are having to figure out what is part of a pledgeship and what is hazing for our first pledge class. We understand that making someone pick up a broken bottle from the ground just because i felt like breaking it is stupid, but there are many things that we will do that some may consider (by definition) hazing when we feel as if it just a pledgeship and should no way permanently damage someone mentally or physically.

^^So did you have to "pledge" in this time before you got your charter? Have you in any way been "hazed"?

So temporarily damaging someone mentally or physically is okay?
Don't make it too hard for yourselves trying to figure things out for your first pledge class. I'm betting that Sigma Pi has policies and resources that will lay it all out for you; I'd also bet that if you chose to ignore those policies, you won't be holding on to that charter very long.

Oh, you mean resources like, uh, one of the manuals available right on the Sigma Pi IHQ site?
At least one of them has a “focus on hazing” section (contents listed below), and I'll bet there's lots more available from other sources.
