From the NPC ph factor - Fall 2002

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: EXTENSION

Q: What is extension?
A: Extension is the addition of National Panhellenic Conference chapters to the Panhellenic system on a college or university campus, or the establishment of a fraternity system on a campus where previously none had existed.

Q: Who decides to open the campus for extension?
A: The “Proper Authority”
1. The College Panhellenic;
2. On campuses where the chapters of NPC fraternities operate within an interfraternity association, the chapters of NPC fraternities shall, within themselves, constitute the Proper Authority; and
3. On campuses where no College Panhellenic Association exists and where the administration is willing to recognize women’s fraternities, the administration shall constitute the Proper Authority.

Q. What is the difference between a Panhellenic vote to “open the campus for extension” and a vote to “look into extension”?
A. A vote to “open the campus for extension” is the official vote to begin the extension process and constitutes permission granted by the “Proper Authority.” This vote must be clearly stated in the Panhellenic minutes and must be submitted to the NPC Extension Committee as the official record of the decision. A vote to “look into extension” may open dialogue on extension or establish an extension exploration committee. This does not constitute permission granted from the “Proper Authority” to open the campus for extension. dules, etc.

Q. When should the Panhellenic President contact the NPC Area Advisor?
A. The NPC Area Advisor can provide critical guidance and resources to a Panhellenic Association or campus considering extension. Please contact her when discussion about extension begins. Each member group should also notify and consult their NPC Delegate and/or Inter/National Headquarters prior to any vote on extension.

Q. What data do I need to review before the Panhellenic Association votes on extension?
A. Enrollment statistics, recruitment statistics and chapter membership statistics for the past five years, housing statistics (if applicable), and a growth analysis of NPC groups on campus.

Q. What happens after our Panhellenic Association votes to open the campus for extension?
A. The NPC Extension Committee must be informed of the decision to move forward with extension. Minutes of the Panhellenic Association meeting reflecting the vote authorizing extension should be sent to the NPC Extension Chairman. The College Panhellenic should appoint members to an Extension Committee to handle solicitations, materials, communications and presentation schedules etc.

Q. How do NPC fraternities find out about the opportunity for extension on my campus?
A. Notification comes in two forms: the Panhellenic may choose to target certain NPC groups or the Panhellenic may use the NPC Extension Committee to notify all 26 NPC groups. The NPC Extension Bulletin is issued to all NPC member groups approximately eight times per year.

Q. What resources on the extension process are available to me?
A. Visit the NPC Manual of Information (13th Edition) section on Extension, the NPC web site at www.npcwomen.org, contact your NPC Area Advisor, or contact the NPC Extension Chairman.
