Officials agree to remove 4 fraternities' suspension

University officials decided Monday to remove social suspension from the four fraternities whose members admitted to consuming alcohol at the Greek Retreat.

Don Robertson, vice president of Student Affairs, Mike Young, assistant vice president of Student Affairs and Jim Baurer, Interfraternity Council adviser, all met at 9:30 a.m. in the Curris Center office to review written submissions on each fraternity chapter's position about how the individuals who drank alcohol at the retreat were held responsible.

Young said the group made its decision on whether the fraternities' chapters held the individuals accountable for their actions.

"It's not always the group's fault for what a member does," Young said. "So when you hold a specific member accountable for inappropriate behavior, it helps to strengthen the group overall."

The fraternities are allowed to hold parties if they follow the IFC policies, Young said. The fraternities are still on probation, which means the University will continue to observe them, until service hours are completed.

"As long as they do the right things, the probation will go away," Young said.

The officials will then decide if any fraternities remain on probation following the completion of service hours, he said.

Rob Whitfield, public relations director for IFC, said via e-mail the individuals involved were in the process of completing their combined 85 hours this week and would finish tomorrow. "The Interfraternity Council applauds the University's decision to withdraw social suspension sanctions from the four fraternities involved in the Jonathan Creek incident," Whitfield said.

Whitfield said the IFC has no plans to investigate the incident further.

"The Interfraternity Council believes that its $1,000 monetary and 85 hour community service donations are adequate restitution for any and all complaints filed by Jonathan Creek," Whitfield said. "Following the completion of the Jonathan Creek community service hours, the entire incident will be considered closed."
