The word frater is pronounced frAHter (rhymes with water). So while it looks like frat, it is far from that. And yes, our book "The Teke Guide" does say that "frat" is a derogatory word and should not be used. Of course, all of us slip sometime or another, especially online, all those pesky abreviations.
