Man shot and killed following Selfridge breach

This is the second person in a month to do this.

An unidentified man was shot and killed Wednesday night after he drove recklessly through security at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base main gate and raced around the base hitting a parked vehicle and driving at federal security officers, officials said.

He sped through the main gate at Selfridge on Jefferson in Harrison Township about 7:50 p.m. without slowing down or stopping as required, said Lt. Penny Carroll, spokeswoman for 127th Fighter Wing at the base.

The man led security officers on a chase as he continued driving through the base. He rammed a parked vehicle and attempted to run over officers as he tried to escape, Carroll said.

Officers shot the man several times to stop him, Carroll said. The man was rushed by MedStar ambulance to Mount Clemens General Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The man has not been identified. Michigan State Police are investigating.

The incident was the second security breach this year at the base, which is home to the Michigan Air National Guard and reserve units of the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

Abdallah Karadsheh, 21, of Macomb Township was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Detroit on April 14 on charges of entering a military base for prohibited purposes and attempting to maliciously destroy property.

He was accused of leading security officers on a chase April 4 at speeds approaching 90 miles per hour where military aircraft are parked.

Karadsheh told Department of Defense police that he was a "security officer for God" sent to the base to retrieve a badge and that if he could reach a speed of 120 miles per hour, he would go straight to heaven if killed.
