It sounds as though she "knows" them just to say hi or see their face. To ask those sorts of people makes you look desperate/creepy/stalkery.

If you DO know them better than that, please for the love of all that's holy don't say "Hi! Should I rush as a junior?" You have to get the conversation around to that in a subtle manner. Again, if they change the subject really quickly, DROP IT - either they don't think you're sorority material, or their sorority already has that taken care of for the spring.
