Based on what I've seen, one can get help for alcoholism outside of treatment centers.

The longer a person stays sober does not necessarily mean they WILL stay sober. He/she is just a dry drunk who may or may not have issues, who will still have to deal with whatever crap the world throws at them. Those alone might lead them to pick up another drink.
