In the older days, this might have been the case; however, most sororities today do not allow hazing and have strict policies banning such activities.

Sororities that have such policies usually make the new member period (it's no longer called "pledging" for this reason) a short time (6 to 8 weeks) and gives the new member an opportunity to learn about the sorority's heritage in addition to bonding with their new member sisters. Yes, parties are involved and are fun, but you are not required to do anything that goes against your own personal beliefs...if you feel this is happening to you in ANY circumstance, then you need to let the advisors know!!! Each sorority has a chapter advisor who upholds the national bylaws of that organization and to guide the collegiates through a positive experience...

Things have changed a lot since those days that you describe. It's usually a positive experience that provides opportunity for self-growth and exploration...
