The show ended with a cliff hanger, assuming there would be a following season. At the end, John Doe was chasing a masked man, who he believed to be part of the group that had brainwashed him, down a tunnel. The man got up into an exit and his mask fell off to reveal...Digger, John's friend.

After the show did not return, it was revealed that it was not Digger, but a man who had plastic surgery to look like Digger so that John would believe his friend was a bad guy and be left vulnerable. It was not explained how or why John knows so much stuff.
